12 years agoLevel 8Honestly I have never made a map in my life but I would love to get started. Is this very hard to do? I have worked with alot of 3D programs such as AutoCAD, MAYA 5.0, and studioMX oh and also photoshop but I rarely speak of it.
What programs will I need to do this? Are they very similar to anything I just mentioned? Can I use a program such as Maya or AutoCAD and take a file from there and use it in the program for making a map?

With that type of experience, it should be rather simple to get going. Once you get going, it is the *ancient* nature of the q3 engine that presents the greatest obstacles/limitations. IMO, there is a decent amount of theory/tech that goes hand-in-hand with this, and the more one understands, the more likely someone is to be capable of producing great results.
BTW- that 3d experience? HUGE. IMO, the best 3d model format is .ase, as it allows one to (quite simply) change textures/shaders for the models after being compiled/exported form the 3d app. This allows great flexability of use of said models within *Radiant. Plus, being able to craft 3d objects that can be imported into your maps? Priceless.
I have been told that *Radiant can feel a bit... ancient.. when compared to modern game mapping apps and 3d apps. IMO, this is one of the primary causes of someone abandoning mapping in the earliest stages of learning. Well, that and a lack of basic computer *skills*, such as basic file/directory operations.
