Map competitions

Let me summarize:

http://www.urbanterror.info/forums/topic/26649-the-map-competition-forum/page__pid__312057#entry312057

The lack of any push to consistently bring forth new quality maps to urban terror is killing the game. I have a lot to discuss on this subject however I'll spare you the trolling.

Would there be any interest around here if such a contest took place, from the mappers, and from spectators? Or is this a lost cause?

I am sure at one point or another all players have thought "I think I could make a great map". Time is certainly an issue for me and after diving in and trying it perhaps the skill set to achieve the goal. Many maps are simply amazing in one way or another and for the first time mapper thinking of trying map design this can all be overwhelming. I have always believed in the adage "less is more" when it came to writing and composing music. I for one would be very interested in designing maps or even taking part in it with others. For the Mapper Noobs out there I would like to offer you WILY this suggestion which may spark interest in map design for others. "MAP DESIGN FOR DUMMIES TUTORIALS" maybe a small series of mapping design basics in video format from yourself would help. Accessible through TS3 downloads maybe, which would hopefully build the community in a positive way. (not that this is needed) I think that all players involved with this community hold you and your skills and abilities in the highest respect, and with your involvement it would be sure to enhance Map design interest for many players. I can tell you that after seeing Nikki Bver's "KingsGambit" the first thought for me was "WOW great map!!" I want to try my hand at this again.

Nikki has come an incredibly long way in just a year. I think she's in a competition with herself! :D

EZ - my skills got a massive boost going through the hell-week known as a mapping contest against urt veterans/gods. Those times were highly painful and highly rewarding. It's like a war ... great advancements are heavily researched as fast as possible at any cost.

I don't know if I'm up for hosting a competition, because I don't know if there's any real interest left in doing so within the community. Could be dead wrong due to the ideas described in the link I posted above. FSK405 historically has not made any significant contributions to such a competition. The times have changed though. I'll be watching this thread to see if there is sufficient interest.

I'm sorry to see that there is no interest in more people making maps. Would be nice to see for sure. I myself am still interested Wily. Would like to know what program you are using if it is available for use and maybe some tips if at all possible. Have a great idea for and olympics map, summer and winter. let me know thanx.

I was interested at one point, but I couldn't get past where to put the files from gradiant. I'm sure that my UrT folder is latent with files that don't belong there. For the beginner, that part was particularly confusing. Not sure if there were actual instructions in with the files, or you had to go that thread in the forums and do a lot of wading to glean information.
I liked EZ's idea of a video, but maybe just a short, simple, tutorial would be great.

Tools: Two choices IMO, NetRadiant and ZeroRadiant. I use NetRadiant, and can walk through setup with any who want to try it. I have NetRadiant and a small pack (zip) of files that are needed up on our TS3 file suppository (okay, depository..). PM me, hit me up on TS3... all it requires is patience, and a little technoknowledge...not too much, but at least a little savvy.

Honestly I have never made a map in my life but I would love to get started. Is this very hard to do? I have worked with alot of 3D programs such as AutoCAD, MAYA 5.0, and studioMX oh and also photoshop but I rarely speak of it.
What programs will I need to do this? Are they very similar to anything I just mentioned? Can I use a program such as Maya or AutoCAD and take a file from there and use it in the program for making a map?

Maybe we can talk about this later in ts3 Wily?

I will be in TS3 later Keeper...

With that type of experience, it should be rather simple to get going. Once you get going, it is the *ancient* nature of the q3 engine that presents the greatest obstacles/limitations. IMO, there is a decent amount of theory/tech that goes hand-in-hand with this, and the more one understands, the more likely someone is to be capable of producing great results.

BTW- that 3d experience? HUGE. IMO, the best 3d model format is .ase, as it allows one to (quite simply) change textures/shaders for the models after being compiled/exported form the 3d app. This allows great flexability of use of said models within *Radiant. Plus, being able to craft 3d objects that can be imported into your maps? Priceless.

I have been told that *Radiant can feel a bit... ancient.. when compared to modern game mapping apps and 3d apps. IMO, this is one of the primary causes of someone abandoning mapping in the earliest stages of learning. Well, that and a lack of basic computer *skills*, such as basic file/directory operations.
