11 years agoLevel 10Attention all Urban Terrorists and Supersoldiers! Have I got a special treat for you!
The details of this announcement are important. Read carefully. Be excited. Be afraid. Behold in amazement!
As some of you know, I've started up my own venture. Things have changed over the past year. I began with intent to build Supersoldier as a stand-alone commercial game; that soon evolved into founding a company around a new game engine in which I could build Supersoldier on. My technical partner responsible for that engine flaked out, so I gathered up my ideas and realized an incredible platform that could envelop even a game engine. In fact, this would become a platform capable of handling all manners of digital goods. My company is DVISOR Hypermedia, LLC. The platform is known as the /dvisor platform.
The tech that powers /dvisor is above the top. We're talking groundbreaking and disruptive. We're also taking this slowly, to avoid overexposure and implosion. We can't be trampled too early, for that would destroy everything! Not optimal.
Dvisor needs social capital and some minor early publicity. This includes a demonstration of a prototype. Minimum viable. That means the very most basic feature(s) work - expect absolutely nothing fancy. In fact, the only goal of the initial prototype is simply to show a single bare-bones segment of the process. It's not about looks, it's about feel.
I want to demo that we can distribute an asset (a digital object, be it a file, or data glob, whatever). This is where I tap the community that's grown around my work. I want your help to download an asset using /dvisor.
But - to get what I want, I'll need to give you something in return. I've been working with EZ to coordinate the release of Superman2 (beta), a day or so prior to the Compendium. As of tonight, I have that beta in server playable form. Details to follow. This is where what I want, and give, come together. Registered Compendium players will have the opportunity to use /dvisor to download ut4_superman2_beta.pk3 as the asset.
To prove out the prototype, the asset, map, will be distro'd in 2 parts, like you might see with a multi-part rar or torrent pieces. This puts us on the hook for when you have acquired the first part of the asset, in order to successfully assemble the data into the playable map file, you will need to acquire the second part, which will not be made available for 24 hours after the first.
Your browser will do all the heavy lifting. Whatever CPU calcs are happening, whatever code is executing, all will be transparent. The experience must be as simple as a standard download.
When all is said and done, this is what results: the community gets a superman2 beta map, consisting of a LOT of new gameplay, and DVISOR leverages the experience to improve business relations with its partners. It's a win-win situation!!!
What to expect from the beta of superman2:
Gameplay! At least EIGHT new arrows. THREE new buildings. Loads of new combos! FUN!
Beta! Unless the q3map2 daemons are nice to me in the next 2 weeks, the map will not be compiled with lighting. Nope, no fancy lightmaps. Massive huge map has too much lightmap data - thus needs massive optimizations. You know what though? You'll be flying around in such bliss, having no cares about lighting. It improves performance too!
If you remember the excitement of going from superman_beta3 to beta4 to beta5 to _pre to release, you'll know that each new release is disorienting! I've pulled together piles of work already done by the (disbanded) Supersoldier development team, Sleeping Guy, and my past solo development on the map. There was a LOT of content to pull from! That simplified matters greatly - lots of snap-in geometry, lots of fast solutions already in queue for problems I bumped into requiring hours of fixing. How great!
Please use this thread for all questions and comments about the platform and map. This community never ceases to impress me! -
Level 10So glad that I got up early to read this.
Wishing you success in your new venture, and can't wait to learn an all new Superman.
Thanks Wily, you rock. -

cheers

edit: questions
• Will I need UrT 4.2 to play Superman 2?
• If I understand this correctly dvisor will be a combination of game-engine/Steam/OnLive and run completely browser based, cross-platform/OS independent? So, I can keep my Mac and don't need to get a Windows-PC asap?

So... is this like a cloud? -

Good questions!
1 - No. Haven't even tried it 4.2! Should work with any UrT version, or Quake3 mod. I aim for portability!
2 - Yes you can keep the Mac. We'll probably recommend using Chrome for this prototype, as Chrome has more of the necessary features and abilities vs Firefox, IE(10), and Safari. Like really good WebGL support. -
