December 9, 2009 - Electronic Arts hopes to dethrone rival Activision and its Call of Duty franchise as king of the first-person shooter genre, and looks to do so with a few of its upcoming titles.

During the 37th Annual Global Media and Communications Conference in New York City today, CEO John Riccitiello stated he's going after Activision's successful franchise, and believes the upcoming release of Battlefield Bad Company 2 is the starting point.
"Call of Duty, a title I'm very much targeting at taking back, started as million unit franchise, and it built to being more than 10 million," Riccitiello said. "But often, in a category as competitive as this, a title can get tired."
"I think were at that point. And I think [Bad Company 2] represents our best opportunity of taking the first-person shooter business back from Activision."
Riccitiello later continued on to say Bad Company 2 does have its advantages over Modern Warfare 2.
"I think it does online better, it's got destructible environments, and driveable vehicles, which makes it much more interesting from an open-world perspective," he said. "I think there's room for both, but we have our competitive juices flowing.
"We've taken it back from the skate category [with the Skate series]. [The first-person shooter genre] is next."
"We're going after this with a vengeance," Riccitiello stated.
Electronic Arts recently announced the revival of the Medal of Honor franchise, which will take the series to modern day Afghanistan.
