15 years agoLevel 10So, I'm thinking about getting a Black Lab or a Boxer and I have looking around locally, and I'm not finding anything that really is making me pull the trigger. Black Labs from the connections I have here are ranging around the $800-1000 range.
Granted they are great dogs, I don't know if I really want to splurge on one. Lately, I have been trolling the local Humane Society's website and going in there regularly, but not finding anything I want to take home. I've also been looking online, and found a bunch of dogs, but they are hours away and the price range varies significantly.
I'm wondering if anyone knows personally or pretty close, a dog breeder that breeds Black Labs and Boxer purebreads. Hopefully, close to the midwest or within a few hours drive of the midwest. I would possibly go further depending.
Anyway, yall know anyone? Or got any leads? What market can I tap with this community? -

15 years agoLevel 3Earl:
Labs are a big deal here in Arkansas. Lots and lots of duck hunters around. Are you dead-set on getting a purebred? The price range on basic purebred labs here is closer to $250. If you get into the champion duck pedigrees, it's closer to $500-$800. I have a "lab" that I adopted from the local animal shelter here. I've had labs my entire life. This one looks and acts like 100% lab, but he topped out at 35lbs. He's kind of a miniature lab I guess.
I'm sure this is too far for you to come for a lab, but I'm actually in the market for a golden myself. I'll probably be checking out breeders in the near future.
In general, I can't stand dog breeders. Selective breeding for physical characteristics has really screwed up the dog world. Many lab breeders breed for personality characteristics though, so labs as a whole don't seem to be as screwed up. That being said, I have some friends with horror stories about psychotic labs. They're few and far between, but that's what happens when people start cranking out labs to make a buck. -
15 years agoLevel 10Supa, yeah there are breeders up here that I have looked at. I was first looking into getting a dog from the same bloodline, my friends dad had a black lab from. This line is a champion field trial bloodline. The guy doing the breeding just started out and is only asking about $950 for a pup. However, once he has experience, he has a bloodline that can get up to the $10,000/pup (from what those in the know tell me).
I'm not going to get into field trialing, or don't plan to at this point, but the bloodline that I was looking at, I know two of the dogs that came from there personally, and they are pretty much the mold of a dog built like a brick shithouse, smart as shit, and as tempered as you can get.
However, I just can't convince myself to drop that kind of coin, when I see dogs at the local pound for $200 (adoption fees, shots, etc. included). Only problem is, dogs at the pound are all mixed breeds. Normally with German shephards or unknown mixes.
Then, I look online, and I'm seeing breeders from Minnesota down to Oklahomo and Mizzou, etc. that have varying prices, all on pure breads. Problem is, I don't know these breeders. So, I look here for advice.
So, basically, I keep debating with myself to spend $200 on a pound dog, and wait for one that matches what I am looking for, or spending a couple hundred dollars more, maybe up to $600 or so, and driving a little bit to get it.
I'm looking for a male black lab or boxer around 7-9 or 10 weeks old. -

I am the nice one.Level 10Earl,
Forget the breeders. Look in the paper and online for local people who've bred their own dogs and are looking to get rid of their litters. Go to their homes, check out the male and female doggies and then pick one of the pups. It shouldn't cost you more than $400. I went looking last year and found some awesome yellow labs that way. -
15 years agoLevel 10We got our Yellow Lab at the local shelter in 2003- an Air Force family decided they couldn't keep her after the husband was sent to Iraq (The wife had a job & kids & the dog was 12 months old) Shelter costs- $80. No papers, but she's all Lab. She's obviously 'field' Lab, cuz shes taller and has more energy than a 'show' Lab. She's 81 lbs. & is 6 1/2 now. Shelter dogs come in all shapes and sizes, and can be great dogs- 'Mishka' is proof. Here's some pics from a couple of years ago.

15 years agoLevel 10take Shelia's advice and go look at the mom and pop if at all possible. I personally like the girl dogs better not as much interested in sex if you have them fixed and are alot more friendly than male dogs.I never could bring myself to have the male fixed I guess it's a guy thing. The females dogs that I've had (labs that is) all were real easy going dogs
