The Official FSK405 College Football Thread

If you have something to say about college football, general smack talk about it, or a good video clip please post it here.

BTW, since a few of late have been living in their teams past, I was going to paste the run of all runs by Johnny Rodgers back in 1972, however; I'll just post the one below.

Can you say the best college football team ever? : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v_oP7vTSrOk

What is a Sooner?

College sports fans are hard-pressed to find a nickname that is as unique and as linked to a state's history as a Sooner. The University of Oklahoma is the only school known as Sooners.

The Oklahoma Territory opened with the Land Run of 1889. Settlers from across the globe, seeking free land, made their way to the prairies of the plains to stake their claim to a new life. One of the few rules to claiming a lot of land was that all participants were to start at the same time. Those who went too soon were called "Sooners."

As time went on, "Sooner" came to be a synonym of Progressivism. The Sooner was an "energetic individual who travels ahead of the human procession." He was prosperous, ambitious, competent, a "can-do" individual. And Oklahoma was the Sooner State, the land of opportunity, enterprise and economic expansion, very much in the Progressive spirit that engulfed the old South in the 1920's.

OU athletic teams were called either Rough Riders or Boomers for 10 years before the current Sooner nickname emerged in 1908. The university actually derived their name from a pep club called 'The Sooner Rooters.'

The success of University of Oklahoma athletic teams over the years has made the nickname synonymous with winning.

I agree he had so much potential, I would say to the point he could have maybe been the best NFL runner ever. However, "Angry Larry" effed it all up starting and Nebraska when he kicked Scott Frosts and his girlfriend's ass then has been down a straight path of shenanigans since.

claim a series record of 28-23-1 while Ole Miss has the series 27-24-1 in favor of the

The Texas - Nebraska game revealed a few interesting points:

Texas:
1). Texas Freshman QB is getting better.
2). Greg Davis (Offense Coordinator.) is an idiot.
3). Although Texas has a good defense, the secondary is still suspect at best.

Nebraska
1). Nebraska is back, as long as they can keep Callaghan and do not get into the revolving head coaching door.
2). Neb.'s team speed is vastly improved especially on defense.
3). Nebraska still has the best football fans, hands down.

Looking forward to seeing this game next year in Austin!

The Oklahoma State Cowboys return to the road this week as they battle the fourth-ranked Texas Longhorns in Austin. Texas is the last remaining unbeaten in Big 12 play.

The Cowboys will be looking to build on the momentum they established in Saturday’s 41-29 win over No. 20 Nebraska. The Cowboys spotted Nebraska a 16-0 lead before roaring back for the victory.

The Texas contest launches the final month of the season for the Cowboys. Following the trip to Austin, OSU will host Baylor, travel to Texas Tech and host Oklahoma in a Thanksgiving weekend Bedlam game.

The Cowboy-Longhorn series is not long, with just 20 all-time meetings, including the 10 previous meetings over the last decade as conference rivals. OSU’s last and only win in Austin came in 1944 (13-8). Oklahoma State has had a couple of near misses at Texas (37-34 in 1998 and 17-15 in 2002) since the Big 12’s formation. OSU is 1-9 against Texas as a conference member.

Nebraska vs. Missouri Game Notes

Nebraska (6-3, 3-2) vs.
No. /25 Missouri (7-2, 3-2)
Saturday, Nov. 4 - 11:10 a.m. Central
Memorial Stadium (81,067) - Lincoln, Neb.
Surface: FieldTurf
Series: NU leads, 62-34-3
Last Meeting: Missouri won, 41-24, last year in Columbia
Television: ABC (Regional)
Radio: Husker Sports Network (51 stations)
Sirius Satellite Radio: Channel 146
Special Events: Homecoming; 100th all-time meeting; Veteran's Salute

Lincoln -- Nebraska begins its November stretch run with a Big 12 North Division showdown against Missouri on Saturday at Memorial Stadium. The winner of the 100th all-time meeting between the schools will take a huge step toward representing the North Division in the Big 12 Championship Game on Dec. 2 in Kansas City. The Nebraska-Missouri matchup will be televised to a regional audience by ABC Sports with kickoff set for shortly after 11 a.m.

The Huskers and Tigers enter Saturday’s matchup tied for the North lead at 3-2 in conference play, one game ahead of third-place Kansas State. Both Nebraska and Missouri have already recorded victories against the Wildcats, meaning the winner of Saturday’s game will own a one-game advantage and the tiebreaker with just two games remaining.

Both Nebraska and Missouri must regroup following losses last weekend. The Huskers dropped a 41-29 decision at Oklahoma State. The loss was Nebraska’s second straight setback after a 22-20 loss to fifth-ranked Texas on Oct. 21 in Lincoln, and dropped Nebraska to 6-3 overall. Nebraska will enter Saturday’s game unranked after being in both national polls for each of the first nine weeks this season.

Missouri also missed a chance to take the divisional lead, losing 26-10 to Oklahoma in Columbia, marking the Tigers’ second loss in three weeks. Despite its recent losses, Missouri boasts an impressive 7-2 overall record and No. 25 national ranking (Coaches) entering Saturday’s game. The Tigers own league home wins over Colorado and Kansas State and picked up a road victory at Texas Tech. Missouri has one of the league’s most explosive offenses, ranking third in the Big 12 in passing at nearly 260 yards per game.

Nebraska hopes to use the home field to its advantage against the Tigers. The Huskers have won the past 14 meetings against Mizzou in Lincoln, dating back to a 1978 Tiger win. Saturday’s game will also include Homecoming festivities in Lincoln. Nebraska lost its Homecoming contest to Texas Tech last year, but had won its previous 36 Homecoming games.

I'm nervous about Mizzou. We looked good against Texas but our Defense frickin folded after the first quarter against Okie State.

I'm wondering how legit Cosgrove is. I don't care for him. He has a shit ton of talent on the defensive side and he can't keep them playing to their potential. Also, where are the captains at? They need to keep their teammates engaged in the game.

Mizzou had 1 total yard by their tailbacks against OU, Mizzou is overrated and OU completely let the air out of their tires when we whipped them at home. They will still be hung over by the loss, NU by 7

"Colt McCoy threw for a career-high 346 yards, and his three touchdowns gave him a single-season school record of 27, also moving him within two of the NCAA freshman record of 29 established by Nevada's David Neill in 1998."

Texas back in the title game? currently sitting 5 BCS before the louisville loss.... Florida still has to play South Carolina, Florida State, and SEC Championship game..not sure they can win out. I think its highly possible if Ohio State Beats Michigan

Re: The Official FSK405 College Football Thread

It will be OU, they shouldn't have let Colt play. It was obvious that he wasn't ready. All of his throws were off, that said I hope that guy that took that cheap shot on Colt gets dealt with, that was completely uncalled for and he hit him on his trouble shoulder.

OU is Big 12 South Champs, Colt Mccoy was not full strength and it cost Texas the game, I blame the coaching staff for not seeing it earlier, I saw it from Tulsa, Ok

Re: The Official FSK405 College Football Thread
THURMAN_MERMAN, Fri Aug 24 2007, 11:55AM

Has any team ever had a more bizarre year than the 2006 Oklahoma Sooners? Has anyone ever had so much success, with almost no one remembering it?
The program withstood the late-summer revelation that quarterback Rhett Bomar had been on a no-show job plan, had to deal with the soap opera that was the blown call on a late onside kick in a loss to Oregon, and will forever be known as the team that lost to Boise State in the Fiesta Bowl.

Oh yeah, and it won the Big 12 title.

If an 11-3 record and a BCS berth is a bad season, there are roughly 110 other teams that would love a similar misfortune.

However, OU plays for national titles, but is the program as strong as it was before losing back-to-back national championship games? Can Bob Stoops, who didn't run off to coach the Cowboys, Alabama or anyone else, as many feared, get the Sooners back on top? The answer lies under center, where it has for a while in Norman.

Two years ago, Bomar had to suffer through his apprenticeship. In 2006, Paul Thompson returned to the quarterback spot and acquitted himself fairly well. Now, it's up to Sam Bradford, Joey Halzle and Keith Nichol to lead a loaded offense. With Bradford winning the job, he'll be under the microscope all season long. But for a program that went through last year's adversity, simply finding a quarterback is a walk in the park.

Oklahoma Sooners
Team Information
Head coach: Bob Stoops
9th year: 86-19
Returning Lettermen:
Off. 25, Def. 20, ST 5
Lettermen Lost: 10

Ten Best Players
1. WR Malcolm Kelly, Jr.
2. CB Reggie Smith, Jr.
3. OG George Robinson, Jr.
4. FS Nic Harris, Jr.
5. DT DeMarcus Granger, Soph.
6. C Jon Cooper, Jr.
7. CB Marcus Walker, Sr.
8. RB Allen Patrick, Sr.
9. RB DeMarco Murray, RFr.
10. PK Garrett Hartley, Sr.

2007 Schedule
Sept. 1 North Texas
Sept. 8 Miami
Sept. 15 Utah State
Sept. 21 at Tulsa
Sept. 29 at Colorado
Oct. 6 vs. Texas
Oct. 13 Missouri
Oct. 20 at Iowa State
Nov. 3 Texas A&M
Nov. 10 Baylor
Nov. 17 at Texas Tech
Nov. 24 Oklahoma State
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Adrian Peterson may be in the NFL, but there are enough good backs around to tempt Stoops to go back to the wishbone. The offensive line returns four starters and plugs massive (6-foot-8, 350) JC newcomer Phil Loadholt into the left tackle spot. Wideout Malcolm Kelly is an All-America candidate, and there's good depth behind him. The defensive front seven took some hits, but the secondary is going to be excellent, and reloading is never a problem up front. If the quarterback position solidifies, and it should, Oklahoma will be right where it wants to be.

Ho hum, it might just be the Big 12 champion once again.

What to look for on offense: In a word, balance. The Sooners are going to look to run and pass in equal doses, and it would help a lot if Bradford comes around quickly. OU will be able to run the ball well, thanks to a great line and plenty of backs, led by Allen Patrick, providing a steady dose of last year's formula. Run well, get timely passing, win.

What to look for on defense: If the Sooners can fix their front seven, this could be a highly dangerous outfit. The question is not only whether the D can stop the run, but whether it can get pressure on the passer with just the front four. The Sooners had just 26 sacks in 14 games last year, hardly enough to be considered imposing, considering they had one of the nation's most talented, and deepest, defensive lines.

This team will be much better if... it improves its passing offense. As effective as Thompson became, the Sooners were still 70th in the country in passing. Without Peterson around to bull through eight-man fronts, the Sooner running attack will stumble at times if Bradford can't launch an effective downfield attack.

The Schedule: It's far better than it looks on paper. Considering Miami isn't Miami and has to come to Norman, that's not the non-conference nightmare it would've been a few years ago. The rest of the non-conference schedule is a joke, as the Sooners play North Texas, Utah State and at Tulsa, which will be like an OU home game. The one really tough game against the North, Missouri, is at home, while the only true Big 12 road games are at Colorado, Iowa State and Texas Tech. A three-game home stretch late in the year against Oklahoma State, Texas A&M and Baylor might seal the South title, if the Sooners can beat Texas on Oct. 6th.

Best Offensive Player: Junior WR Malcolm Kelly. The 6-foot-4, 217-pound junior has to come back from a knee injury that cost him almost all of the Fiesta Bowl. If he's back to his old form, he'll be one of the Big 12's best receivers, as he comes off a 62-catch, 993-yard, 10-touchdown season, with three 100-yard games in his final four before the Boise State loss.

Best Defensive Player: Junior corner Reggie Smith ... or junior safety Nic Harris... or senior corner Marcus Walker. Smith started out at corner before moving over to strong safety and now will move back to corner. Wherever he plays, he's fast enough to always be around the ball. Harris was mostly a nickel back before turning into a whale of a free safety late in the year, finishing with 68 tackles, four interceptions and eight pass breakups. At 6-foot-3 and 226 pounds, he's an intimidating force who can do it all. It took Walker a few games before he became a starter, but he grew into the role, finishing with three picks and nine broken up passes. These three form the bulk of the nation's best secondary.

Key player to a successful season: Redshirt freshman Sam Bradford or ... Junior QB Joey Halzle... or true freshman Keith Nichol. While it's Bradford job for now, he'll have to perform to stay on the field. Bradford is the future star of the show with the most upside and talent, Halzle has the most experience in the system, and Nichol has a nice mix of skills to be the No. 2 man.

The season will be a success if ... OU wins the Big 12 title again and is in the hunt for the national title. There are several major issues to worry about, from the quarterback situation to the defensive line, but the overall talent is in place to make a run for the whole ball of wax. The schedule works out well enough for any team worthy of the BCS to get through undefeated or with one loss at most.

Key game: Oct. 6 vs. Texas. The last time OU lost three in a row to the Longhorns was 1997 through 1999. Losing to them two years ago was one thing (Texas had Vince Young and a national title team), but getting beaten 28-10 last year made this year vital to stop the bleeding. The momentum in the series has to turn back OU's way in what should, once again, be the game to decide the South title.

2006 Fun Stats

Third quarter scoring: Oklahoma 119; Opponents 47
Fumbles: Oklahoma 33 (lost 22); Opponents 23 (lost 14)
Rushing yards per game: Oklahoma 177.1; Opponents 98.7

I think that if Texas and OU take on BU at EDU, then most likey we'll have another QU at the OSHG this year.

Now, just like the SAHD last year, most of us remember ASDA MDA, but me..., i tend to choose AJDSJASMD MSAMDA... mostly because they are UASDH and ASDAS MF.

Good luck this year OAOS and hope you kick ASDJA DJASDN asse's.

It's been almost one (1) week without an arrest of a Longhorn
football player! Good Job Mack - way to keep those boys in
line!!!

(Note: for those of you that don't know,Austin 's Pride has
produced, within the last month:
F our (4) boys- w/ mugshots and prints. Two for armed robbery
(w/firearms), one for auto burglary & DUI and another for DUI)

Despite, their days of "good behavior" - I thought you might
find these jokes timely!

1. What do you call a drug ring in Austin ? A huddle.

2. Four UT Longhorns in a car, who's driving? The police.

3. The UT Longhorns have adopted a new "Honor System". Yes
Your Honor, No Your Honor.

4. The UT Longhorns knew they had to do something for their
defense, so they hired a new defensive coordinator: F. Lee Bailey.

5. How do the UT Longhorns spend their first week at fall
practice? Studying their Miranda Rights.

6. What do you say to a Longhorn in a suit? Will the defendant
please rise?

7. If you see Longhorn football player on a bike, why don't
you swerve to hit him? It might be your bike!

8. The Longhorns employ scouts. But to look out for cops, not
to scout high school kids.

9. I heard a rumor that the Texas Department of Corrections
plans to build a new prison in Austin , Texas in order to allow
Longhorns to walk to school.

10. What do you call it, when a Longhorn goes on vacation?
Time off for good behavior.

11. Why couldn't the Longhorn get into a huddle on the
football field? It's a parole violation to associate with known felons.

12. Obviously Coach Mack Brown is not paying his players if
they have to resort to robbing people.

Fire Callahan!, get rid of the rest....
Re: The Official FSK405 College Football Thread
FSK405 Earl, Tue Oct 09 2007, 11:25AM

I don't think we are quite at the point to fire Callahan yet. Close, sure; but give him at least one more year to get a full system in place. Defensively, the players don't play for Cosgrove, they complain in local media, they do not deserve to be called Blackshirts. This defense hasn't earned it.

Zach Bowman doesn't wear his blackshirt, he gave it back. He said he didn't think he deserved it, even as a starter; one of our best too.

If your leadership can't get the job done, and if Pedersen is blind enough to not have seen it coming from the cheers Badger nation had when he left that program to come stink up our place; Pedersen should see enough of it now.

To me Callahan's days should be numbered but I'm not ready for another 3 years of rebuilding just yet. I still have faith that he can get it done, but he needs to get more success around him and possibly give up the O-coordinator position and get a new defensive camp. About the O-coordinator job, we still need to execute as well, and that has been inconsistent cept for Purify.

Re: The Official FSK405 College Football Thread
FSK405 Earl, Tue Oct 09 2007, 12:39PM

We have current and returning back up for three years Joe Ganz. Could be decent, hasn't gotten much PT the last three years, so it is tough to say.

We have 6-4, 220 FR, Pat Witt I think, which hasn't seen the field of play.

We have a five star Rivals recruit out of Mizzou that has a verbal commitment name Blaine Gabbert, but I won't hold my breathe giving Harrison Becks turnout and Josh Freeman pulling out on us. Hopefully, he sees this as the best opportunity for him to come in and make a name for himself.

My hunch is Ganz will be the starter going into Spring and we'll see what happens with Witt. I see him being out next Ganz.
