I agree with your points. It's funny how pro's to urt whom are also noobs to superman stereotype blue for being disadvantaged. I will be looking to balance this in supersoldier. It was a great pair of games to see what the map is really capable of, and where its faults are.

Additional stats: out of ~85 invited players, we had 22 players join plus 3 facilitators for GTV. For 2 teams we maxed out playerslots, requiring dropping some game cameras due to induced lag and needing 2 additional slots. Some of this being experimental I think the whole event went quite well.

Players picking players was a fun setup. We should do that again.

Bomb mode on superman freeze was fun too. The whole freeze map really changes the dynamics of the game with reduced visibility. Continuous positive feedback indicates a strong potential future following of the map mod.

Thanks go out to the numerous people involved in setting up the many moving parts of the match. Reflux, DankRider, MrTinker, Fokker, BanMe, Creeper.

My own editorial perspective - would have to say I was a bit distracted, just not able to put my full concentration into the game. Guess my scores show it. Would have liked to really crank up the heat with a slew of badass moves to show off for the camera. There were some great stand-offs and some really funny wtf moments (like how on red while I'm guarding the flag in security, one red guy bursts into the hallway from exec, gets blasted by a red guarding the hall, then the red guard gets blasted by the next red following the first into the hall. wow. lol!! and we lost?)

If we do another match like this in the future, it will definitely be more streamlined. Not to say today was rough but had its kinks. Overall the match was absolutely a success.

Great fun. Pity the lag spiking up to 600+ and only getting 14fps made it pretty much unplayable from here. Soon as we moved over to the scrim server the problem went away. Why wasn't it all played there?

Yeah, I think all that's needed are more and better flag grab-paths for red. Right now, there are two very good ways for blue to grab red's flag while in flight. There's about half a flight-path (because it's an intermediate jump/slide) for red.

Maybe you could increase the scale of the hotel by about 1.2 and move the (comparatively smaller) flag up forward some. That'd give red a clear flight-path coming up from garage. Toss another flight-path in somewhere and maybe get rid of the ledges (or make them smaller), and it's probably a 50-50 map.

Longi: I about pulled the remainder of my hair out well into the match trying to fix your lag.

Blue advantage? Well, blue DID have the distinct advantage of having me and Tinker on blue both rounds... ;-)

Very fun games. Great competitors.

If we use the Um3 server in future events, I would bump us up to 30 slots beforehand. At 24 we didn't have enough slots. The ping issue was troubling for Longi and a few others as well. Since our server is *usually* rock solid, I'd be interested in learning where the bottleneck was, and taking steps to rectify it if possible.

Need to remember to not delete the match config used off the server - we can use it in the future.

ut4x_superman was awesome! I'd love to play "freeze/fog" superman on the 24/7 server regularly. The fog makes jumping and sniping more difficult, it's fun. For the first time in around a year, I was patently on the edge of my seat during jumps. I bet those lazy, boring snipers who don't want to learn any jumps will be more than challenged by the change!

First of all a big thank you to everyone who worked behind the scenes to make this match possible.

Then apologies to my team(s) for the sub-par, not-titan-worthy performance :(

But excuses, excuses:

Just like Longi I had A LOT of lag...my netgraph went berzerk, FPS dropped from an average 60 to 20-30 as soon as there was some action and on a few occasions players just disappeared. In the second round it seemed to be a little better, but still far from good.

I notice my problems seem to increase with player numbers - also on the fsk server: Up to ~10 players everything is perfect, but when the server gets full it starts getting unplayable.

Since I'm the only European having these problems, there seems to be something wrong on my end, dunno if it's my ISP or my laptop...playing on a 2.2 C2D MBP and a 3Mbit connection, which I thought should be sufficient for a 10 year old game :)

Well, nevertheless thanks everybody and we should definitely do this again (once Longi and me got our direct fiber link :D)

The bottle neck, sir, is in the game engine. We experience this plenty on Sunday nights. The code was designed 13 years ago by id Software when 16v16 was insanity and most people hadn't yet heard of DSL. We've observed that when you hit 10v10 or higher, there are severe consequences to the game for all. If you increased your slots, you'd only increase the headache.

The match probably put the hurt move on your server's cpu. We'll have to impose team player count limits next time to compensate. I'm sure people will appreciate the higher quality match over the wait time.

Writing a new game engine is probably beyond the scope of a purely 'volunteer' effort, and licensing a current game engine isn't likely feasible due to cost. Hopefully a 'newer' engine will become available at some point and FS will have the time and inclination to update our game properly. I'm not going to hold my breath, unfortunately.

Same. I was in a groove during the warm-ups, had a nice triple kill on blue for instance. Unfortunately during the first game I floundered some, probably because this was hyped up so much and there were cameras recording it all... just like prom night in the limo all over again.

Great games and I really enjoyed bomb mode in the fog for awhile after the match. I also really appreciate how we got some former regulars to show up.

As to whether it is really a blue biased map, I guess auto-balance and people purposely switching to make it a more enjoyable game and a real difference. Truth be told, I think I have been in more epic games randomly on the server., eg a19-19 score for 1/2 hour or more. Nonetheless I would like to see these titan matches a semi-regular occurrence and be able to participate on occasion.

How about an invite night (password sent out to the regulars) whoever shows shows based on capacity. Higher cap limit (20), no deliberate team picking and when people go afk for piss or a beer let it auto-balance and otherwise team balancing all works out for itself like it does when we don't try to plan it out.

I agree with CDaly, it wasn't epic at all, it just felt like a pub with all good players

here are a few ideas, feel free to criticize or give other ideas:

-have blue side play 1 man down, like 10v9 or something

-do multiple matches of maybe 5v5 on seperate servers concurrently then have the winners and losers play each other

-make some kind of stats and/or ranking system for players who play in these matches, you could generate balanced teams using this and it would be faster than picking

Another idea I just thought of would be to create 4 distinct permanent teams which could then trade players or add free agents to their teams.

Every week you could have 2 matches (A vs B and C vs D) and make a league out of it.

the way I imagine it would not be like FSK405 vs um3 but teams that are independent of clans and just for this league, they could have players from multiple clans.

since you love cliches you could call it the superman league of legends

It takes some experience playing matches to get over the butterflies and be at your 100% come game time. From my perspective, this was much more fun than any pub game.

Having said that, I played on blue both games so I'm biased. I saw red try to play defense both rounds and with some affect. It might have helped if they had played more/better defense.

Come to think, the spawns are more screwed up for blue than for red. With the exception of spawning outside, blue always spawns on their roof. Red spawns in the lobby, executive, security, military roof, and mid air. Some of those spots are so far from jumpers that the red team might as well have 2-3 seconds of respawn tacked onto them. Putting all of red's spawns on top of red roof OR fixing blue's building spawns to work for respawn as well as initial spawn might even the map a little.

Truth - I like the round robin and non-clan suggestion.

Tinker - Personally yeah I and perhaps some of the others were not use to the pressure/butterflies of match play so that might have influenced it but even with that and poor defense on red in consideration this could have been more epic somehow. There was only modest strategic discussion in both rounds, everyone was expected to play their usual game. I did hear someone suggest Ace snipe from exec but apart from that... I think you are right about the spawn points being a factor in the imbalance, blue roof gets camped hard both close and in person (as does red roof) and from a distance from ponds, red roof, exec and doom.

EZ - I really like bomb mode on this map and especially liked the fog in the frozen version of this map this group got to play. I still want scoped weapons (well my beloved sr8 but ok to let psg1 and g36 go) pistols and nades plus somehow I hope we can turn off noob goggles.

As I said, a semi-regular regulars invite night would be awesome.

you know part of the reason we see a blue map is because "titan" players don't play D.

playing dynamic defense is *hard*.

mandy and xsmoker know what i mean.

and you get no points for it.

red *needs* defense to win.

i think this match was great.

i can see doing it with mandatory rounds like a scrim,
maybe 5 cap limit each side. (or a time limit as per ban)

The key to defending red roof isn't necessarily the red roof itself- sure, the red spawners can help clear the roof, but the keys to defending it are Doom roof and garage. Keep those clear and 75% of the red flag threat goes away, not to mention providing flag return cover for blue flag carrier.

IMHO, if red controls these 2 areas, and effectively sweeps the red roof on respawn, they control the game.

When I was red on first map I was a "defender" & got most kills in this round but the problem is, you can reach red roof from complete frontside by arrow, from stairs by exec, from garage and from doom, also from execroom the walljump by windows..

thats pretty much to defend.

I think the main problem with red is that blue can get in and out with the flag in 2 seconds flat from either garage or doom, whereas it takes at least twice that to get the blue flag off the blue roof.

Obviously on top of the fact that its easier to take the red flag its also easier to cap the red flag, its like 7 seconds from red to blue roof and twice that from blue to red roof.

when everybody in the game knows how to move around the map as fast and efficiently as possible these weaknesses become huge factors.

Wily says he has no plans to edit the existing superman and I get the impression that supersoldier will probably not be released soon so I think we need to just make the blue team play with 1 man fewer than red

Glad's strategy makes sense. It's very hard for blue to come up the front of red and ledge grab without getting taken out. It seems lately that swooping in form garage or doom is the best bet. We started out with Ban and Devil as our two defenders, but after we got down 3 or 4 caps, I said that they were actually two of our best cappers, so tried to get others to defend. it seemed most of us were having a hard time grabbing the blue flag and surviving for very long.

I used to only play CTF in leagues when I was a noob but I think i've played like 3 CTF matches total in the last 4 years.

The blue team can capture the red flag with a single leap from the red roof to the blue flag within several seconds. I can't do it well myself and I wear armor usually, but some players are very consistent with the jump. I don't know if this advantage played in the match though.

It sort of did. Blue has a better "jumping game" than red does, and I think that's the main source of unevenness. Red needs one, maybe two, new way(s) to grab the blue flag easily.

or we try to use the bugs, just jump from red roof down to blue flag, shot spin & jump at one time, maybe ull survive lol

Just move one of the buildings further back so you can't do that jump OR hit the arrow in front of blue from red roof. (even that jump seems unfair because all you have to do is practically FALL off the red roof to make it, but to go from blue to arrow on red steps you need SOME stamina)

You would have to move the buildings REALLY far apart to make it impossible to hit even the front blue jumper from red roof, you can pretty much jump from the red roof to the edge of the map behind blue building, well maybe not quite that far but certainly to the water in the little construction site back there.
