New Monitor Questions.

BanMe, Wed Dec 01 2010, 03:57PM

I've looked into all of these things. I'm just looking for opinions from someone not trying to sell me something.

Monitor Size:
I've been using a 17 inch monitor for the last 9 years. Are the 27 inch monitors worth the extra $50-$70 extra over the 24 inch monitors?
Which of the two sizes would you consider the best for playing video games? Urt/Battlefield

Response Time:
Is looking at this number even important? Do you notice a difference between 5ms response times and 2ms response times? (Mine now is 16ms)

Dynamic Contrast Ratio:
Do you see that big of a difference in monitors with 50,000:1 DCR compared to the ridiculously high ones over 1,000,000:1?

Any help on buying a new monitor is appreciated.

I think you need to get yourself in front of a bunch of monitors and decide for yourself. I'm sure there's a technically 'correct' answer to all of your questions - that doesn't mean any additional cost is outweighed by additional benefit.

I used to work in a retail store; HP had some models nothing else competed with effectively. The blacks were very black and the colors very distinguished. I can't say how those same HP models stack up now, but I'd definitely pass through the better/top of the line HP models to get a baseline.

Monitor size: Bigger's always better IMO. Check the max resolution your graphics card supports. Don't get anything 'above' that limit.

if you have a hdmi graphic card, buy a native hdmi monitor, don t let someone sell you a old vga plugin with a small hdmi converter. I have a monitor with both vga and hdmi plugs and a graphic card with hdmi native with a converter if i want to plug a vga cable. The same monitor same resolution pluged directly with hdmi is a LOT more neat that pluged with vga.

for the X ms stuff I did not see any difference between 2 or 5 ms (at job)

For the contrast (black very black) I am happy with a Samsung Syncmaster2253bw ( 8000:1 2ms )

Quality being equal, you can find cheap quality 24 inch monitors yet really hard to find cheap quality 26-28 inch monitor... So the price point lends me to suggest 24 inch over 26-28 inch monitors.

You always try to find the highest resolution of the smallest size monitor. example: 1920 x 1200 looks better on a 24inch than a 28inch. Furthermore, do not settle for 1920 x 1080. you are a gamer...go for quality.

response time: hard to judge apples to apples as many companies look at GTG (gray to gray) instead of colors which is a better judge of real world experience. That being said, stay under 5ms...

Pixel Pitch: 0.24mm is better than 0.25mm which is better than 0.27mm.... you get the picture. Smaller dots on the screen the better.

Brands: Personal favorite - Samsung (I have two 26inch), LG and Acer (Pxxxx series only)

1080 looks more stretched because its shorter than 1200. Make sense? If any of you would like more information, just grab me in TS. I am around in the evening around 9pm-11pm CST.

I think 1080 is the standard these days, but then you set your display settings to 1200 and you are good to go...please correct me if I'm wrong. I've just been looking at a lot of monitors lately (thinking about upgrading too) and haven't seen anything available other than (xxxx) X 1080. None the less, I am considering two of these, one for my birthday and one for Christmas, http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=6089031&csid=_21 , and one of these to go with them, http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4521947&CatId=2465.

I'm gonna need a bigger desk....

I play at 1600 x 1200 on a 1920 x 1200 and set the monitor to not stretch. You get black bars on the right and left, ,(I hate the stretch) Dell 2407 Ultrasharp

What graphics card are you running?

Instead of making a new thread ill toss this in here.

Does anyone play in 1920x1080 resolution? I just can't get the hang of it. The players look bigger so I should be able to play better but i'm getting the exact opposite. I changed back to my normal 1280x1024 and put it in window mode but i fell like im just wasting that extra monitor space. Any tips on adjusting to that resolution?

I'm running 1920x1200 on a 30" in window mode with my cg_fov = 110. I agree, the shape of the characters were different when I started tweaking the X:Y and fov. I figured that if I was in "widescreen" style, that I should increase the fov since I have more horizontal to view. It also followed that the chosen window size was a natural shape for the monitor since the native resolution is 2560x1600, 1.6:1 as is 1920x1200. When I picked dimensions that were not 1.6:1, I noticed that I had various video lag problems.
