Mapping help pls!!!

LadyHellfire*, Mon Sept 27 2010, 09:38PM

Hi!
Since i get irritated in the pub some days, I have decided to give mapping a go again. I am using NetRadiant 1.5 with W7x64. It is currently the only version/mod of GTKRadiant I know of that will work properly with W7x64.

I am going to try a pretty wild map for my.. hmm.. 12th or 15th try here. My first obstacle is.. Tubes!!!

I want to make some semi-transparent tubes that players can run/fly through. They need to be able to curve as well. I would love to have about 1/5 of the tube have running water, if possible. Basically, I am making a Water Park map. It will have full pipes, half pipes, and even some 1/4 pipes. Pools, grottoes, all on an island in a lake. I want some of the full tubes to go underwater in the lake. Inside the tubes, I want to place "boosters," sort of like Wily has on Superman with his arrows. Getting those to "push" players through tubes and around curves is possible?

Further, I want to be able to have some moving *vehicles* that one can hop on in various spots.

So, anyone who feels brave and giving enough to help me out.. I will make you cookies, or buy you a six-pack. Maybe both. I do also have Blender installed, if that would be a better tool to use for some/most of this.
thx!

oh- I do reaalize the UrT forums have a section for mapping; I have read through it, and due to my own neuro-differences, I do not feel it is the best place to ask for help. I would rather sit here and "starve" than go there just to eat from a buffet of shite.

I don't think round surfaces are possible in Radiant, or at least i think ive heard that somewhere. So the tube might have to be a multiple sided polygon of sorts.

Hmm...if they're not, they're probably pretty easy in blender.

That's the one useful bit I have in me regarding mapping :P If you need a 'tester' you know who to call though.

Same for me. I'm not really useful in the mapping department but ill test something to death for you

Oh, it will get tested on our servers.. :)
Tubes/cylinders/arcs/etc are not strictly possible, but they can be "faked." The problem is making one that you can walk in/through. I can make them, just not make ones I can walk in. I have done tons of searches, and so far nada.

How about making them icy and 'lemming safe'? That might make high to low tubes possible. Does making a roof 'icy' and pushing someone up with a jumper work like you'd expect?

Ramb has some surface generators that he used in his icy maps may help u out http://mapgen.nerius.com/

U can make a map model in blender or making map in blender then import GTKRadiant link http://www.katsbits.com/tutorials/idtech/exporting-models-as-bsp-maps.php

thx Blackie!

Wily actually helped me figure the cylinder part. Create object, then Cylinder, invert, repeat.. each Cylinder will be *solid* and visible on one side only, so by making two identical but one inverted versions layered, it appears to be a single, two-sided solid tube. Found a nice glass shader, now need to figure how to create some donut type pieces to accent and place on end edges..

Blender is yet another learning curve... very cool though.

What about all those computer parts in that map that's like your inside a computer? Lots of cylindrical shapes that we climb on but they are all solid.

Ooooooooo... water park.... now THAT's a great idea. Should be a blast once fleshed out.

Moving vehicles.... A 'loop train' perhaps? Or trolley cars? (like at the zoos/theme parks) 'Rumble' has that balloon that goes in a big circle... (to look at and see how it works)

Who was it that's been working on that map with the highway and train tracks running in parallel with moving cars & trains ? (and even a plane as I remember) He has implemented it nicely.

Sleeping Guy has designed some moving stuff, but I don't know if he knows how to do the kind of stuff you can get onto.

yep- sit kit bored.
most of them are external access only, which I could do. Access and solidity inside and out was rough.. which that one does have, as well as Rumble (spawn area). All I have seen that have in + out are paper thin..might have missed "thick" ones somewhere...

Ohh!!! That is sweet!
I want to make stuff like that for players to get zipped through... going to make them clear (mostly) so you can see people going through, maybe some open ares to be able to shoot them, and them shoot out as well.

How about just enclose the jumps on superman with tubes, ditch the street for water, and call it good?

Does anyone have knowledge about importing Google Sketch up models into Radiant?
I use Python 2.6 for Cry Engine with no problems. So there has to be a way. I can`t find many info on this matter. Please help.

I remade Abby for Crysis using Google Sketch up.It`s basically one big model. So it has to be possible.
I have 4 maps ready to publish and upload, I just need the third party software to finish it on Radiant.

New request, diff map idea..
I am looking for a nice "outer space" type sky for a map. The idea is simple: A *glass* object somewhere in some galaxy, you and your team are inside it playing CTF. I thought about simply making it a training facility on the ground, but this seemed more fun.

Obviously, multiple light sources form the *sky* would be nice, but not sure if the Q3 engine allows it.. shy of that, a distant star providing *base* light, the structure will have *internal* light sources.

yet another help request:
I love Wily's "launchers" on Superman. I am working on a map to learn some techniques I will use for the Water Park map, and one thing I must have is the ability to "launch" people through curves. Think... going backward through UT_Sled maybe.

Will keep up the trial and error for now...

THANKS !!!!! BlackSix, you are the best. You found my needle in the haystack. If I have anymore questions, about anything, I will ask to you.
This will take so time to master, but you have opened the doors for me.
Look out Radiant, here I come.
