You know, the more I think about it, the more I think that, in addition to a good anti-cheat (4.2, where are you?) we need a good PAID UrT software package. Register the serials. One serial per user. The programmers are clever enough to institute an effective activation/registration config. Most of the UrT fans would gladly pay $25 each for the game in order to avoid the asshattery.

Asshat-free UrT... imagine...

I´m talkin in my opinion of course, but i second what u stated Glad.

i will not cry if we need to pay something for URT, so that we can be asshat and hax free.
and i believe that many URT players aprove this opinion to.

we all love free games, programs, etc, but we are always surrounded by this sh....

I think whilst you make a really valid point Glad, I have to disagree. I wouldn't have found UrT if it wasn't free. I was using Linux and looking for a decent fps game to get me away from playing America's Army and to fill the gap left by removing Halo from my life when I switched from Windows.

Swiftly, many of my friends started playing UrT and I think I can safely say none of them would have done so if there was a charge for the game.

Yes, the level of tomfoolery in UrT is higher perhaps than in some other games, but exclusivity locks people out. Openness encourages people in, and that includes people who could be a valuable asset to the game and the community.

good point Rob, same happened to me, i started cause it was free to play.

But nowadays this game (URT) is well known by many people, its an "old" game, one of the best fps there is, but we have to agrre in one point:
hackers, and asses look for "free" games, without steam acounts, and URT is "heaven" to them, if it wasn´t the effort of the Admins to keep game clean, but all efforts aren´t always enough :(

The people who likes URT or even the new players wouldnt mind to pay something to keep it far from asses.

u have to agree that who wants to play COD, CS, BF without asses they have to buy the game, and theres a huge number of players enjoying the games.

just my thought, everyone has the right to have different opinions, but with payable URT the number of players would not decrease, and we will have the garantee that we will only have fair players

:D FOT

This game wasn't always 'free', it used to be that you had to own Quake 3 to run the mod. Same with Quake 1 & 2, mods such as Team Fortress (Q1), etc. A lot less BS went on when it wasn't free.

I applaud 'open source' software and the developers who donate their time to create it, but our current issues underscore the one big flaw in a purely 'open source' model- that is, that efforts toward 'open-source' software security must be as thorough as the efforts toward creating and improving the software itself in the first place. Until this happens, Free software will be worth exactly what you paid for it.

Imagine one of the 'free' versions of Linux without an anti-virus running on it. That's what we have here- a 'gaming version of Linux' with no AV support. Imagine trying to use your computer and you have to stop at least twice a day to get rid of a virus. Hard to fathom, isn't it? Now imagine trying to game and being interrupted by cheaters and asshats twice a day. (that one's not hard to imagine at all)

OK- How about this?- Game is free, playing on 'unregistered' servers is free, and it costs $25 for an EFFECTIVE registration/anti-cheat/whatever system to play it on 'registered' servers.

PS- The game isn't really 'Free' per se, since folks like FSK405, many clans, UAA, generous players, volunteer mapmakers, etc etc, donate boatloads of time and cash to keep it afloat. The aggregate amount of money that goes to support UrT alone due to server fees, websites fees, bandwidth, hardware, software, etc has to exceed $50,000 USD a month. Very few players ever make a single donation to keep this stuff running, much less a 'regular' monthly donation. The ongoing ability to play this game isn't 'free', it's just that most people don't realize (or just don't appreciate) that there are a small minority of us willing to fork over cash on a regular basis to play it and to allow others to do so as well.

On the topic of charging for UrT, worm and Glad make good points. The restricted serial system existed under the Q3A engine back in the 3.7 and earlier days. If the dev team wanted to directly profit from it they would have had to license the Q3A engine and factor that into the cost.

With the release of the Q3A source code under the GPL license, the development of the ioQuake3 engine became a possibility. This engine has undergone many improvements which has allowed games like UrT and Tremulous to be standalone and entirely free (not relying on a copy of Q3A to run).

My understanding of the GPL license is that the dev team could change back to restricted serial system and charge for it. The drawbacks are:

- Since the serial system would be a part of ioUrbanTerror (ioQuake3 with modifications), it would have to be open-source code per the rules of the ioQuake3 (Q3A source code) GPL. Obviously, hackers could see how the system works and most likely compromise it.

- Negative publicity.

- A severe decline in players from which it be difficult to recover.

- Having to develop and maintain such a system, which I wonder if the dev team has the resources to support.

- As part of developing this system, the dev team would have to break from the development track of ioQuake3, which is a serious problem if one wants to use future ioQuake3 updates.

The hackers and asshats are a nuisance yet I fear a restricted system would hasten the demise of UrT. Although I was gone for the 3.7 days, my impression is that the UrT was in a serious decline and might not have survived without the release of 4.0 under ioQuake3. UrT is a great game but it is running on a heavily modified engine that was released 10 years ago.

I fear that 4.2 will be the last major update. Regardless, I applaud the dev team for their continual development and support, and I will enjoy the game while it lasts.
