Superman PRE-Release info!

We had an awesome private pre-release party. Monday's public pre-release went very well. Dankrider and Mindriot commandeered a new B3/server config and made sure you guys could play the map with the best server performance available. No problems were been found that marred the public introduction. I'm getting great comments and compliments that really quantify the amount of effort I've put into the map.

This is the public pre-release. Anyone is free to play the map in whatever means they want. The map will become obsolete once the final release is done.

I had taken a step back, due to numerous people's help when I was under the gun of time, postponing RELEASE and instead delivering a public PRE-Release. Probably the best move I could have made. Previously stated, this version was supposed to have a lifetime of one week, with the release coming out next weekend. Further level-minded thinking post-pre-release (ha!) says that two weeks will be a reasonable and sain amount of time to complete the final updates, include the necessary documentation, make sure all of everything is in the best order.

So - the ETA on the final release is currently in two weeks (weekend of the 6th). This is not a hard date. I may push the date back further if necessary.

Anyone want to post screenies from the private pre-release party? I've got some of my own as well. Please keep them 800x600 or so if possible to avoid forum rendering wackiness!

Post comments on the map here. If you find issues, I need to know asap. Map changes or related suggestions will be heard, but I will not be modifying anything in the map unless critically necessary (beyond anything I have already planned myself).

- Wall of Immortality requires inscribing.
- Ground at WoI to be completed.
- Jump from hotel to WoI to be perfected.
- Complete readme.txt
- Superman FAQ.
- Missing polys at Frog's Fountain.
- Blue spawn move at main street.
- Carport fix.


Non-issues that stand as-is:
- Upward wind drafts in military elevator.

Comments for new players:

ut4_superman is not Casa. It is not a jump map. Unlike traditional UrT maps, you are required to look both up AND down, and eventually become proficient in maintaining a vertical awareness just as much as the standard horizontal awareness.

Flypoint arrows MUST be jumped in to. You will blindly walk over an edge if you do not cognitively make the effort to jump to your destination. Intentionally flying/jumping large distances is a core design point of this map. This is not a quake3 map, these are not jumppads.

Land on stuff. Large objects on the ground can generally be landed on. Cars, bus stops, the large black arch supports, impending doom's bushes, many many others.

Hold jump when landing on something that incurs an angle. Examples are a car's windshield, arches, etc.

Slide using crouch when boosted across the ground to gain greater distance.

Strafe to change your destination (flying, falling, or sliding). Requires additional foresight as to where to land if midair.

Look around in midair when flying. If you let the arrow boost you to it's default destination, you will almost always find yourself landing in a safe location.

Emergency swan-dives and leaps-of-faith are common. Many times it's easier to correct your path mid-air than planning it.

Hey wily, we experienced a problem, I think it was during the map restart at the beginning of a new game. I couldn't move and was slowly drifting on the map when I spawned. The demo doesn't show it but I was actually lying on my side (at least from my view). I could move my mouse to look left and right and up and down but my arrow keys wouldn't move me at all. You can see in the demo that others were affected the same way.

The newspaper will be themed to the map, as was the previous paper. Don't expect a pattern of politics though.

Not sure if you can do anything about this Wily, but when i was playing the pre-release just before, i got stuck on the ladder from the new billboard. Had to /kill to get out.

Also, might just be my computer, but occasionally when i die the weapons 'rattle' on the ground and make an awful noise.

I've noticed it here and on other maps, as well. But there are spots near the ground of red building that weapons rattle a lot more than on any other maps. It's a peculiar thing, and I've no idea how to reproduce it at the moment.

That's a urt/quake3 issue. Happens when an entity isn't flat to a solid surface, like hanging over an edge or by an angled surface, etc. Nothing I can do anything about.

Stuck on the ladder? That shouldn't happen, but can. Not much more I can do there either.

Sometimes these built-in issues with the engine can be worked around, or helper brushes can smooth over the issue, or another technique can help avoid the issue. I use those whenever possible, but they do require some creative thinking and application to make the problem go away.

The carport issue has been fixed entirely - another example of creative issue handling. Had to build an arced shape of playerclip brushes, bend the edges down around the curve, then evenly align the brush heights down the driveway. This prevents the inadvertent incorrect patch-curve height calculation the engine is apparently doing. Basically I made an invisible stair that prevents the player from coming in contact with the curved driveway curb.

What else have you guys found that I can patch up quick?

A couple of other problems, nothing too major: I got stuck climbing up the traffic lights next to the blue spawn under the highway. I spotted these white lines under the garage, barely noticable but i thought you might want to know.
Also, one time when i jumped off red down to the billboard, i was boosted on untill i hit the edge of the map by the river, havent been able to do it again.

I've done that last thing, the edge of the map thing many times i think its becuz u either held crouch or are using the crouch and cover bind and forgot to unlock your crouch.

When I'm landing on the billboard metal mesh after falling from military, if I don't hit it exactly in the center, I fly off in another direction, sometimes all the way across the map. Obviously I should just land exactly in the center, but even lemminging would be better than flying all the way across the map.

I was holding crouch when i did it the first time, but everytime i try to repeat it, i just land normally, kinda annoying me now seing i was able to go from red roof to the far end of the river in one jump. I have tried it with the bind and just holding crouch

If you kill a flag carrier standing right against the base of the waterfall the flag will go inside the rock base and is un-returnable.

Trying a fix against the pole ladders, should help. The lights are "light bleeding" which I'm not worrying about at the moment. Thanks!

Progress update. Applying a heavy coat of polish over the map. Tightening up a number of very minor issues. The new jump from hotel at Irwin towards the WoI has finally been perfected - you can hop off the arch and sorta grind over the wall. Breaking up radio locations into more detailed areas. Some texture updates. Hunting down any and all unseen uncaulked faces. Working on vis improvements thanks to $Null. Other stuff. etc etc

Thus far the pre-release has held well in pub play!Only a couple very minor issues found (and fixed).

That's due to the 1 unit thick areaportal brush. It blocks vis. Basically, imagine it as a engine rendering divider or seal - nothing exists (visually) on the other side of it when the doors are closed. It deactivates when the doors open. If the brush doesn't touch all edges, the vis area does not seal and fps pours through. Messy.

Unfortunately I do not know how to split vis at zero units in thickness. The visual anomaly you see only affects yourself, causing all entities to vanish. Make no mistake though, just cause you close your eyes doesn't mean everyone else can't see you... ;)

The reason you didn't see that in b4 is because I implemented the brush incorrectly, rendering it useless, eating fps in the process (since useless polys are being drawn).

Basically, until I'm able to find a better method, just ignore it. :)

Well spork a duck. Determination and necessity, right? Figured it out! A brush with areaportal on one face, skip on the other 5 faces. Weird disappearing bug fixed!!!!!

Quick story. Couldn't sleep last night. Got up, still plenty dark. Grabbed a Wired magazine, looking for a specific article/image. Headed to the computer, looked through the map, figuring out what to work on. I'd noted a particular section of the grass I liked. A while later, all grass at the hotel had been cleaned up. The curve patch replaced with brushes, now able to sustain the fancy grass.

Jumped in the shower while a compile burned away, thinking "who in their right mind 'optimizes grass' when they can't sleep?". lol!

Oh and I was hating on the big blank useless paved SW corner. Now it at least appears occupied.

Sure there is definitely some spreading, especially when hiding with the flag. Having vent to throw nades into room on blue roof also encourages people to find other spots to hide. Less camping on garage behind truck as before.

How about another spawn point or two for both sides? Lower ponds, construction site, park, billboard and other out of the way places but close to arrow boost locations. I don't know if you can affect the probability of a given spawn point but if you are reluctant to have out of way spawns you can do so less frequently.

In bomb mode I think some blue should show up in or on their base instead of the two construction sites. Red can drop in and kill off a couple and create mayhem a little too easily.

Just a thought.

You can already get a red/black cape. Just go to ut4_guerilla it'll install the cape funstuff pack. I'll consider telling you and all the admins the fun stuff code (note. brining me into the clan wouldn't be such a bad idea if you want to know)

That happens alot sometimes i'll spawn on top of the red roof (i'm blue) and sometimes reds even spawn on the road. It's kinda bizzare though it is helpful

On the contrary. I expect the same routes to usually be taken. Most people have been running the same routes since the early betas. Difference is - the advanced players know how to handle themselves through the less used routes, turning them to their advantage. That's one of the great things about this map - you have lots of options at your disposal, or just take the generic path.

In bomb mode I think some blue should show up in or on their base instead of the two construction sites. Red can drop in and kill off a couple and create mayhem a little too easily.

The bomb mode theme and map layout necessitates the positions of the spawns. We put a lot of thought into this, including testing, was not easy to find good positioning.

Sounds like a landing anomaly like a spinjump. Unless you think this is really a problem, I wouldn't worry about it.

The locations reported by radio are sometimes wrong. I've noticed "Hotel Roof" when I've been in Hotel Maintenance, and "Executive Room" when I've been on the new highway billboard.

the blue player spawning in red security room is not uncommon btw, happened to me yesterday too.

i´ve noticed the problem that dad reported to, sometimes when i´m in blue and i hear someone requesting medic in blue base it shows the tag Hotel roof, but the guy/ladie is in hotel maintenance.

aboute the bus stop and waterfall i dont see it as a problem, its good help though, only reported to u guys get the information

This is for everyone - figured now is good as time as any. State of the release.

- The location triggers are being completely revamped to assure correct radio locations. I found robdad's same beef to be annoying, having inaccurate locations, so I'm fixing them - all.
- Re-vis'ing portions of the map. Thanks to Null, I'm doing some baseline work on vis which will ultimately be totally rehomed in supersoldier.
- The hotel grass has been tweaked to current level greatness, because it will be a signature texture and I want it to be done right in the release.
- Wall of Immortality continues to be worked on. I'm still unhappy with the area layout. All aesthetics so fear no gameplay changes. Note anything I'm discussing here has no affect on gameplay.
- -FINALLY- created the KrAt lawn sign, and it is awesome. Actually got the desired appearance I'd hoped for from my concept ideas. Pulling off z-45 degree alignments took some serious skills. Most players will find it to be yet another natural throw-away object, which means it's correctly done (to me). :) Explanation of this downward.
- Must finish the newspaper, and dammit there will be a pond publishing sign.
- Nodrop assessment and fixes.
- Various other minor cleanups as I see them.


It's me against the world for a while. I'm taking my time. Simple as that!

Anyone care to enlighten me on how the wall of immortality is suppose to work? Well besides informing people when someone lemmings there they are not immortal :) Maybe if I come into bustop to right of hotel (blue base) and arc over I can catch that banked curve. I've asked some of the regulars in the game and they didn't know either, haven't seen anyone make use of it yet either.

I think the point of the "Wall of Immortality" is for Duckie to honor those who have contributed to the testing of beta versions...if I understand it correctly. And those who continue to "test" and discuss findings.

yeah that whole immortality thing is confusing me - i keep seeing "ye are not immortal" as bigtext every now and again. whats the craic wily?

can't blame you for taking your time - the map has undergone a hell of a lot of work since the devel from b4 started, and as you can tell the whole community is buzzing about it! To be honest I think a while in pre release will be a good thing, as its under 24/7 testing from the whole community now.

(On that note, how cool would it be if it did take an HK to 'unlock' the wall of immortality? Not worth the work, probably, but interesting none the less.)

Well besides informing people when someone lemmings there they are not immortal :) Maybe if I come into bustop to right of hotel (blue base) and arc over I can catch that banked curve. I've asked some of the regulars in the game and they didn't know either, haven't seen anyone make use of it yet either.

hey wily, you know how u said u no-drop clipped everything? I found a place u didnt: right on the edge of the 'tower" below Pond Publishing, the flag droped there after i was snipe'd and didnt return. It looked like it was hovering in mid air right beside the tower. got shot again before i could screen shot it but this is the place:

I've noticed that there are still parts of the ledge below blue where you can lemming. I'm not sure if that's 'fixable' or even intended, but I figured I'd bring it up since it does make it seem less put together.

This falls under nodrop assessments. Appears that a nodrop must envelop the entity space, rather than just touch it. That's why you'll see flag drops not return at edges where you'd think it should.

You are correct Littlefoot. In fact, I just cut out some text here as it will pertain to what I want on the wall. :)

Sorry Thurman, personally I don't think a helicopter would add to game play in a positive way in this instance. And I think it would be just a little too much...but, this is just MY opinion and I meant no disrespect for your opinion!

I really wanted to put a chopper in that did something. Unfortunately the entity to make this work, i.e. sands chopper, is broken. In supersoldier futures (known as supersoldier_alpha02), there is to be a hovering chopper - with multiple purposes of course.

SSf will probably just be absorbed into SS. As I've noted before, I am hitting the ceiling of what the game can handle in some aspects - but maybe I'm just a noob and not using the map capabilities in an optimized way. It may be possible in 4.2 that the entity to control something is fixed. Consider that superman is designed for 4.1, whereas supersoldier will be 4.2+.

If you can't make the helicopter fly, make the blades rotate and have them kill people that land on it or walk underneath it. You could revise the aimpoint for the Mil HQ to Pond jump to land on the hut on top of Pond, or just leave it as is and make people steer away from the blades in mid-air. There's a map with rotating airplane blades that kills if you walk into them. I forget the name but it has something to do with drug smuggling and it's on the FSK405 map cycle at present (I played it last night).

I failed at screen shot but I was standing on the ground at the corner of doom peeking over at red building. I noticed that the green texture on the little ledge that you added has a top surface that is floating a little above the top of the ledge.

A night or two ago we switched rounds. I had been on red and was switched to blue. When the warm up time for the map passed I was blue and spawned on red roof. It's not necessarily a huge problem, but noteworthy.

in the gargabe containers behing hotel roof, if u jump into the open one, u can enter there and stay there crouched, u can live in garbage :D or maybe camp to get some guys :P

I have an idea for something to add to the map possibly in future versions of the map (beta 7 or 8) also your initial answer is going to be no because it changes the gameplay too much. But i felt like posting it anyway. Why don't you take this building (first picture) and give it a ladder leading to either a subway with an arrow like the parking spots or a sewer also with said arrows. Then at the end where they stop there could be a latter going up to a rode grate. I think it's a good idea but it sounds like alot of work so if you dont like the idea dont pay any attention.

I ran into a problem just recently. Read this if you'd like to know the details. Summary - I accidentally nuked my PC. Bottom line, the map is safe, through serious vigor, although it will be a few days before my system is back in order.

I've missed Dealey (no relation) and glad to hear you are working on it again. I use to get on your server but nobody would go with game mode vote other than Team Deathmatch. I prefer game modes with a plot (CTF, Bomb, C&H).

Well...the map is a lot better, i think, than the old one. Ban Me's idea is a good one but it's getting harder to find flag carriers with all the additions. Especially when there are only 3 -5 people per team. If a flag carrier keeps moving, with added tunnels, arrows, etc. it would take forever to find him (if at all)

I haven't tried on this new version but you can get to lower ponds roof from doom. Start at the top tower and hop jump along the far right edge, jump once on the lower doom and over towards lower ponds. From there with some good timing and mid air arc adjusting you can ledge grab lower ponds.

It would be nice if you could arc from an arrow and if the apex of your arc is not too much higher than your landing spot you should get a soft landing imho, that could get you into some spots like lower ponds. I don't think you can factor in total height attained when conserving momentum in jump beyond simple low altitude jumps but what do I know? Seems like soft or hard landing spots only.

I am not that stellar a ledge grabber, if I was I might camp from one of the lower levels of doom :) The bushes do encourage trying to get down there every now and then without fear of a lemming.

I am also not that great at arcing compared to many regulars...

You've always been able to ledge grag lower pond. I've only done it once. Xan tipped me off to that a long time ago but was low percentage een for him. I still try sometimes when I jump off top of doom to the arrow that takes you to blue roof. If i miss I sometimes get kicked over that way and then try to save a lemming by grabbing but no luck so far.
You don't need to be a great ledge grabber on lower doom. Just takes practise. Sometimes I'm 50 percent at that but other nights only about 10%.
The next thing I want to practise (after all these years) is to hit the arrows on garage. I can do it but very low %. :)

as far as i try i always lemming, but still a noob among u all.

i´ve noticed when i jump from red hq to arrow on lower hotel, sometimes i hit the ledge behind tree and i go direct to pool in a crazy jump. never lemminged.

dunno if u guys noticed that but its real fun :D

Yes son, there are players who used to take blue flag to the front left corner of blue, jump down, and hit that ledge. With the right guidance you can go directly to the arrow in front of red or just land in the water. You can also hit the little ledge that's at a 45 degree angle and go flying over toward the freeway.

another crazy thing. in ponds to, when we hit arrow that send us to back military hq and fall in the yellow porsche, if we aim to the windshield to land, if we crouch in the time we hit the car we are send back to ponds(waterfall).

i´ve noticed this once while ruuning away with flag, i confused the bastard and got into ponds again in 4 seconds

I've found another place the flag can get stuck: i flew off red to the river in the park. Thought i'd lined it up right but lemminged. When i went back to the flag, it hadn't auto returned, imwas directly above the icon and there was no flag to be seen.

I love this map, but I ran across one thing that might need to be addressed if you get time, wily_duck. On the overpass immediately above the humvee the clipping on the edges may not be perfect. I've lemming'd a couple times trying to jump from red to the humvee on what appears to be an invisible edge.

And there's the ladder on top of blue, but that more falls under the "I'm an idiot" category

Hey, just wondering,

Anyone ever as a red - go up to blue base using their front arrow take flag then use the "speedo" (i dont know what to call it) on ground next to the light post (the side where the hotel car is) to slide across the street to maybe behind red building or front of it?

walking there makes me sliding just fine but jumping from above, Im always lemming no matter how close I am to that thing (the 2 thing, what dya call it? lol)
