gaming routeres, are they BS or do they really help?

ZELLIS, Sat Mar 14 2009, 08:16PM

gaming routers, are they BS or do they really help? the application in is wireless "N" network.

background, I have been gaming the last 7ys on a wireless connecting and a laptop. the connection has always been pretty good, but the last year or so i feel the connection quality is failing. i get lots of shark fins on the net graph when playing on any server. sometimes the net graph top stream moves very slowly and i then i get game play problems. normally it moves fast my pin to the server is constant 50~60 ping

Your connection is better than most the whole way through looking at your tracert. Nothing, you would improve on end to end from what your tracert is saying.

Here's mine. No router. Yours doesn't seem bad. I thought i read somewhere where you can fix shark fins with either /rate or maxpackets. just a little lower. Maybe just bind a key for when that happens

Looks similar to mine, maybe a bit better. I'm in Illinois too.

i have messed with the rate in the drop down menu but is doesn't seem to help. when looking at the net graph, the bottom line is the Internet/server (i think) and the top line is your connection local (i think). and the speed of the top line vs the bottom line is the signal to noise ratio (i think). some PLEASE correct me if I'm wrong!!! so the problem I'm having is not a bad ping, but i think its the quality of the connection, or are they one in the same? i don't know. can you have a good ping with a crappy Signal to noise ratio? that's where i was coming from asking about the gaming router. is it possible my router could be messing up, high noise on the line? my 1st line on the trace route has 24ms, that seems high to me, then it drops to 1ms.

You could have a good ping with a shitty SNR or noise in your cable company's plant. You would see dropped packets if the noise was significant enough. At the same time you are dropping packets, your ping could still be good.

Do you have the same "experience" when you bypass your router and go straight from PC to modem?

Zellis,

Things like that last bit are common for me at times as well. Comcast had either some congestion or a physical hiccup that caused that. My ISP peers with Comcast as well, west cost. Comcast's link from LA to Dallas incurs a 60+ ms penalty on average. I'll have periods right in the middle of a great connection where everything drops out. A quick TR shows Comcast puking all over themselves and them my ISP routes me over a different peer.

For a netgraph discussion, see link provided

Nice link reflux, Thanks.

I typically have a good connection, that's why i was ticked when i joined up last night and im sprouting a 160 ping. I also have been doing the wireless connection and laptop, this last year however Ive been semi-forced into using a desktop. it is still wireless but i must say that I think it is spoiling me in the graphics performance department. Solid high FPS with everything turned up. COD is just so visually stimulating to watch... along with porn of course.
